Aveyron is one of France's most rewarding territories for motorcyclists. Winding, uncrowded roads, landscapes of causses and gorges, medieval villages around every bend — the département combines everything a rider could hope for. And Millau, at the crossroads of the great valleys, is the ideal starting point.
Gorges du Tarn — the essential ride
The D907 from Millau to Sainte-Énimie is probably the most beautiful road in the département. About 60 km of tight bends between towering cliffs, with the river below and villages clinging to the rock. Narrow in places — it forces a measured pace, which is all the better. Best ridden early morning in summer to avoid campervans, or in September when the light is golden and traffic thin. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours one way with stops.
Gorges de la Dourbie
Less known than the Tarn, but equally spectacular. The D991 from Millau toward Nant winds between Causse Noir and Causse du Larzac. Generally quieter, this route is particularly appreciated by riders looking beyond the well-trodden routes — the kind of road you keep for yourself.
Causse du Larzac
For those who prefer open spaces and long straights against a vast plateau backdrop. The Causse du Larzac is a wind-swept limestone plateau of low grass and Lacaune sheep. The road to La Couvertoirade crosses an almost lunar landscape of farmsteads and dry-stone walls — a striking contrast to the gorges below.
Peyre — Viaduct — Millau circuit
Short but memorable — about an hour from the hotel. Leave Millau along the left bank of the Tarn, pass under the Viaduct toward Peyre, pause at the medieval village, then climb to the Belvédère nord before returning via the A75. The striking contrast between the valley road and the causse viewpoint makes this loop a favourite among guests.
